When I was a little girl my mother would read to me.
I loved our story time together.
She was animated and fun.
She was also a tired mother of four small children.
More often than not she would fall asleep mid sentence toward the end of the book.
We would all have a good chuckle and nudge her to finish.
She would laugh at herself and continue through slurred speech and droopy eyes.
I never knew why she was so tired until I became a Mommy.
I could chase after the kids, clean the house, and run errands.
But when it came to reading books I, like my dear mother, would feel my eyelids grow heavy.
Many times my children have nudged me to wake up and continue the book.
They may have also nudged me to wake up during a movie a time or two.
I think it has something to do with STOPPING.
I am fine until I stop.
Once I stop and get still...I am toast.
This tired mommy of three crashes and burns.
Last night I was excited to watch the Presidential debate.
Well, maybe not excited like going to Disney World, but I was genuinely interested to see what the candidates had to say. (or not)
I crawled onto my nice warm bed.
I turned the television on to MSNBC.
I placed my laptop on my lap.
I was in debate mode.
I wanted to watch the body language, the posture, and how they handled those stools.
I was on twitter and ready to tweet my every thought.
I don't remember the last thing I saw.
I can't even remember the last tweet I read.
I woke up at 3am because my thighs were on fire.
I woke up to put out the flames and realized that I had been asleep.
My laptop was on my thighs.
It was very hot.
My fingers were still on the keyboard.
Chris Matthews was on the television giving his opinion on the debate.
It was over?
I think I missed over half of the debate.
I had stopped.
My body got still.
I was comfortable.
I fell asleep.
I am so my mothers daughter!

I do that all the time, too! Patrick always tells me to sit down and relax and then do whatever needs to be done. I just can't do that because once I stop and sit down, I am done! Too funny..
I do that now, and I don't have kids!!!!
I am notorious for falling asleep with a book in my hands on the couch...sitting up...
Haha!
This is totally me!
Go, go, go!!
Finally I sit down to spend time w/the man after the kids are in bed and then before I know it....
FAST ASLEEP.
I cant remember the last time I actually went to bed without falling asleep on the couch first.
b says he doesn't want to watch movies with me anymore because i fall asleep... i know all about this...
I have often feared that I would fall asleep with my laptop on my lap. I can only imagine how hot your legs were after being on your lap for that many hours. Whew!
isn't it crazy turning into your own mother??
OH yeah, once you turn the engine off over here, it often falls asleep too... ; )
I hear my mother's voice and words coming out of my mouth and I get confused!
That is too too funny!!!
Seriously, I am laughing out loud! Love it!!
Maybe a sign to stop more often???
Great post!
Oh, you make me laugh!
I am the same way, with a twist. If I slow down in the middle of the day I can fall asleep in the middle of a conversation. AT night, like say, 2 AM, no dice. I HATE that!!!
I haven't fallen asleep at the book yet, but my tongue get so tired from all those words that I start slurring so bad my daughter makes me stop. THEN I go to bed.
I have to stay in the family room if there is any chance of me making it to the end of anything.
If I were tucked in my bed like you - definitely a goner.
I don't think you missed anything we haven't heard a million times before. ;)
Is it a bad sign if this happens to you BEFORE you have children? I am genuinely concerned for myself.
I am the same way...I can go and go, until I stop. Then I totally lose my steam.
You didn't miss much, on Twitter or the debate.
I'm pretty sure, in this regard, we are all our mother's daughters. I just need to sit still and I'll fall asleep. I'm sure it's about to get worse!!
me too...
now I'll go take a nap.
I know what you mean! I could never understand why my mom was tired...all.the.time.
Now I know why...
I hear ya - I only have ONE and I am dead at the end of the day. The second that child goes to bed, I am crawling in my own bed and pass out almost as soon as my head hits the pillow! Zzzzzzz...
I get like that at nap time. Go, go, go all day....and then....wouldn't a rest be fantastic?
Sometimes it's comforting to do things the way your mom did, isn't it?
I'm SO with you on this! I even wrote a poem about this very subject called Sleeping a Book... If you're interested in it,I'll email you the poem!
so i'm not the only one who falls asleep when i get still!
i can go out anywhere!
apparently my husband and his friends think that this is the best party trick ever!
:)
I'm feeling ya.
Again.
You nailed it.
And what is it with how HOT those laptops can get?
