Things I Learned On The Road

I just knew that three days on the road would provide me lots of blog fodder.

It didn't.

I kept waiting for something to happen.

Something so incredibly funny that liquid would shoot from your nose when you read it.

It didn't.

We didn't lose anyone.

No one threw up.

We didn't miss any exits.

No one got stuck on an elevator.

No fights.

No flat tires.

No food poisoning.

Actually it was completely perfect.

Other than departing an hour late, and my seat not reclining.

Minor inconveniences.

The bus driver did a fine job.

The kids were well mannered and polite.

The adults were enjoyable.

The food was incredible.

So Wendi, why are you writing this boring little post?

To let you know that I learned a lot on my trip.

Some of it personal.

Some of it I will share.

I learned that there really are some good kids in this world.

There are some parents who are teaching their children to be fine, upstanding citizens.

With good manners and high moral values.

I learned that when you expect things to go one way, sometimes they go the other.

And you are pleasantly surprised.

I came away from this trip with a new appreciation for the kids of today.

They will certainly be faced with a lot.

These are uncertain times.

But I have much more faith in them.

I saw the world through their eyes for a few days.

I saw excitement.

And energy.

And love.

If this is what our future looks like....we are going to be just fine.

what I love the most is that I too wait for things to happen to post about... sure that certain events will prove "post worthy"... and then they aren't... I hope you are right about our kids... i try every day to see the good in all of them...

Finally a refreshing and happy outlook on kids today. Do you know how nice it is to see this? I was becoming scared for my daughter to grow up. I am so happy! Thank you! Thank you!

Awww...what a sweet picture!

And, I love that you learned such great things about our youth of tomorrow. Maybe I will try to have your good attitude when I return to work to deal with these rascals!

I agree kids of today get such bad press but out there are plenty of incredible parents doing an excellent job raising their teenagers.

Though it would have been entertaining if your trip was a nightmare from start to finish.

I am quietly comforted to know that it wasn't. And that you came away inspired.

GREAT POST!! I teach high schoolers and yes, there are some really bad apples, but there are also some really sweet kids. The bad ones spoil it for the sweet ones. Sometimes, I have kiddos with no homelife...no one doing their laundry or buying groceries for them. Those are the ones that I feel sorry for!! But when they triumph over the adversity, they are so happy!! I learn a lot from my students--sometimes it is how I don't want my kids to be, but mostly it shows me exactly how to be a great parent to my kids!! THANKS!!

Thanks for that perspective! Having been in the classroom for many years it was always nice to see that there were good kids and usually it was a result of good, hardworking parents that took the time to actually parent.

It is refreshing to know that kids are being told good moral values and that they are choosing the right paths to follow. Glad that trip went so well. If you would have taken that same bus ride about 10 years ago, your bus would have had no AC while you were broken down on the side of a freeway. Also, thanks for the memory of me! I do love your kids and have loved watching them grow up. You're a great mom!

What a sweet post. I too believe that our children will step up to the plate when it's their turn and handle things well.

I'm glad you had an "uneventful" trip.
I hate it when kids throw up in the car.

how true...

I think there's a lot more good ones than we realize... but like so many other things... we just hear more about the not so good stuff.

great post.

Glad your trip went well! There is always something great from making these kinds of trips with the youth. It strengthens and lifts everyone!

Thanks for the post!

I read this after being in my daughters room for 20 min talking about stuff, my mom never did that with me and I love that I can do that with her; one day I will be the mom in the picture you posted too.

Everyone seems to think the photo is a mother and daughter.
They are in fact two teenage girls.
The one on the right is 13 and the one on the left is 15.
Very tall 15 year old.
Both girls represent exactly what I was saying in this post.
Great girls.

I was wondering if that was a mother and daughter or two friends/sisters. Either way it is very sweet and I'm glad you posted even without the fodder. Sometimes the best things that happen in life are the little things that we often are too busy to notice. Glad you did.
